Homage to Napier

Napier in New Zealand in Hawkes Bay was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in 1931 followed by a fire which swept through the wooden buildings. The town was rebuilt in Art Deco style with a traditional sea front promenade complete with an outdoor theatre with a sound shell for bands. This pastel celebrates the shapes, patterns and colours seen by the artist and the courage of people who survived to create something beautiful from the ashes.
Pastel on gesso primed heavy acrylic paper 50x60cm
